Description and objectives:

The FLEX24/7 project proposes to conceive the manufacturing systems as a combination of intelligent , autonomous, self-managed and interconnected functional blocks to meet manufacturing needs, providing customized and easily reconfigurables modular solutions. The objective is twofold. On the one hand, to minimize efforts and costs when integrating the elements of manufacturing system, and on the othr hand, to maximize the reuse of common functional blocks sufficiently tested and validated in different manufacturing lines and cells.

To materialize this concept, each one of these modular, connectable and interchangeable functional blocks will be made up of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) that will encapsulate mechatronic elements, control blocks, knowledge about manufacturing process and Artificial Intelligence techniques. These blocks will have a continuously update virtual model, so that this virtual version of the block can be used to perform continuous virtual check and tune-up operations. They will also have self-management, self-monitoring and self-adjustment capablilities, as well as self-learning capabilities in order to achieve a continuous optimization of the block’s own operability and of the system as a whole in terms of efficiency, productivity, reliability and quality of the manufactured part.

Each one of these CPS blocks (e.g. metrological inspection bloc, part clamping block, part drilling block, part transfer block, etc.) can be connected with other CPS blocks to form a network of CPS nodes that will constitute the desire Manufacturing System capable of meeting the desire production specifications. In this way, the Artificial Intellingence and embedded knowledge are naturally integrated into the operation of machines that will be capables of self-reconfiguring, self-adjusting and selg-managing in an autonomous and intellinget way in the face to any internal and external change that take place in the manufacturing processes.
